The Divine Lorraine expands Father Divine's legacy of giving love to the community by sheltering those in need and fundamentally enhancing their lives. Revitalizing preserves the Lorraine's integrity and historically vibrant character by retaining defining features of the primary facades, while maintaining and enhancing the communal atrium. One of the hotel's defining features, this atrium expands access across all floors. The addition's progressive design promotes a sustainable future through education, community participation, and self-sufficiency, while simultaneously being sensitive to the site's historical and contemporary values. New facilities initiate education, responsibility, and wellness opportunities.
In sharp contrast with the historic Romanesque revival tower, the addition's program and form transition into a library, vertical farm, and wellness facility. Collectively, these spaces foster growth and movement toward a new, bold, positive future for youth residing in the hotel and citizens of the surrounding community. The inviting library provides learning environments where both the public and Lorraine residents can grow through continuing education with specialized classes grounded in developing self-esteem, improvement, and motivation in a communal environment. Nurturing a progressive future, the vertical farm emphasizes the importance of responsibility and independence by teaching youth to cultivate and prepare produce. Promoting complete well-being, the wellness center encourages participants to maintain goals of healthy lifestyle. This movement permeates through the rest of the site, connecting with the community through basketball, plazas, and gathering spaces. All aspects of the program and design work interdependently and collectively toward the ultimate goal of hope, love, and family.
