"Develop a multi-story, mixed use building that can respond and adapt to extreme air pollution. The site is a small irregular lot in the heart of Times Square, Manhattan."
In a sleek, clean, futuristic times square in a distant era, there is little relief from nitrogen dioxide, the invisible toxin infecting the city. The structure is the first defense system towards re-purify the environment. Many seek for ways to escape this harsh environment using cleansing materials as the escape route. The second defense system is the conceptual idea that those whose clothes are washed, designed, and interwoven with disinfecting properties will be cleaning the air as they move through the rest of the city. This means that clean(er) air is not only obtained through a single city block.
Programmatically, the spaces will contain:
-living spaces for the textile designers and assemblers
-design collaboration spaces
-larger areas as work spaces for textile assembly
-laundromat for the general public to use to cleanse existing clothing
-boutique to purchase new textiles
-large vertical circulation atrium proceeding up the structure.
